I don't want to

I know this was written and sung with tongue-in-cheek, but, well, I guess I live a tongue in cheek thought-life. These past two weeks have been a killer for me and I wish I was a lifeless robot. I can't say I was ever happier than the time I was married and I am being a pussy. Be that as it may, there was nothing better than being in love and I can't imagine meeting anyone more perfect than Naomi.

The Magnetic Fields - I don't want to get over you
I don't want to get over you. I guess I could take
a sleeping pill and sleep at will and not have to
go through what I go through. I guess I should take
Prozac, right, and just smile all night at somebody new,
Somebody not too bright but sweet and kind who would
try to get you off my mind. I could leave this agony behind
which is just what I'd do if I wanted to, but I don't
want to get over you cause I don't want to get over love.
I could listen to my therapist, pretend you don't exist
and not have to dream of what I dream of; I could listen
to all my friends and go out again and pretend it's enough,
or I could make a career of being blue--I could dress
in black and read Camus, smoke clove cigarettes and drink
vermouth like I was 17 that would be a scream but I
don't want to get over you.

Something Had To Give: goodbye Indie mp3?

With the end of the year approaching, I have been alerted to several blogs that are closing down or completely changing their focus. Some of these blogs are in no way related to what I do here, so I can't see the point of listing them.
One blog that is joining the digital dustbin (God, that was awful writing) has been a big influence and source of new music for me: Indie mp3.

They explain themselves thusly:
An indie pop webzine reviewing albums, gigs and singles as well as seeking out and championing new indie pop bands and labels (2001-2008)
Indie MP3 started out in 2001 which a weekly download from my indie pop collection. There were no other indie pop sites out there (not that I could see anyway). A blog was added in 2003 and the site transformed itself into a fully fledged review site in 2004.
Indie MP3 merged with Lost Music in 2006 which saw gig promotion, club nights and the launch of our own record label. A CDR label is to follow in 2009 alongside our residencies at London's Gramaphone and Enterprise venues. This all means something had to give and indie mp3 folded in December 2008.

I've read a few posts about this sad loss and I think the best one is here.

Geeze, this has made this song embed itself into my mind tonight. Too much "alternative" radio while working retail in the 1990s has me shell-shocked.

The Sound of Arrows says "Let's Do A Remix"

From a myspace post at http://www.myspace.com/thesoundofarrows:
"....+ mashup mp3. As if 4 remixes on our upcoming single wasn't enough, we're letting you try your luck at remixing/mashuping/re-hashing/whatevering 'M.A.G.I.C.'

Go fetch over here: M.A.G.I.C. (Vocals)

It might turn out to sound something like this: The Sound of Wyflec and Arrows - Perfect Magic

Do email your results to us: thesoundofarrows@labrador.se
Good luck!"

This point in time would be a great time for Sweden's Labrador Records to take advantage of the movie and book "Marley and Me".
"You guys up for some reggae tonight?" Wait, there is no reggae on Labrador, but Ghost World is still my favorite movie. No, I mean, film.

Merry Christmas and Apoptygma Berserk

There was not one shred of merry today, as I slept from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m. I couldn't fall asleep on Christmas Eve, so I went home. Now I am awake, and it's raining, so it feels about as wintery as it gets here in San Diego.
The release of this full video has lifted me some. No opinion as to the song yet, but I am thinking it's a bit of Apop on auto-pilot. I look forward to some remixes and even more singles.

I am working on PopCast 20 tonight, happy to have some self-imposed time off. I will be sifting through blogs all night, searching out those pop gems that I love to discover.
Drop me a line or comment, if you can spare a moment.

In time for the new year: Champagne Riot

I am really into this track by Champagne Riot, titled "Scandanavian Warfare." The artist is on Shelflife Records, based in Portland, Oregon.
Photobucket
Here's the what the press release says:
"You needn’t be out of touch with contemporary music or a nostalgic remnant of some other, long-past era to suspect that pop has, by and large, lost its sense of romance. Not only in terms of its willingness to lyrically explore the lexicon of love without the escape clause of postmodern irony, but the romance of unashamedly grand and eccentric gestures – the inherent romance of outsiders seeking to gently subvert the pop song, reconstructing it as something familiar yet foreign, classicist yet newfangled. Think of the Human League’s Dare!, ostensibly a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or New Order’s plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies that were the very antithesis of the everyday.
It is this largely abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which Champagne Riot aspires. And with its debut EP, Paris and I, you hear it realized."
read more here.

Don't miss out on the free mp3s to be collected via the Shelflife Blog: http://blog.shelflife.com/

This track can be downloaded from Shelflife here.

I'm thinking this one will make it to PopCast 20....gonna cross-fade it with Lola Dutronic's "My Radio."

More Blog than you

Photobucket
I'm not sure if I should post this or that without more research, but I have it best to be honest and say "I don't know anything about _________ . "
What I am saying is that I am often exposed to the music of certain artists, without seeing any media images, reading anything about them, etc. I form an opinion about a track or album without any outside influence (with the occasional label association to muddy my vision).
I've enjoyed the music of Ashbury Heights these past few months. I played "Smile" and "Spiders" with some remixes on Like Sugar. I really like their sound and that's enough for me.
All this does not explain my tendency to become a snob and dislike bands because of their popularity. For example, I loved Nine Inch Nails in 1987. By 1992, I was a snob, if only based on "my" band's the exposure to the masses. To contrast my snobbishness, you just read the venomous posts on Drowned In Sound. People "slag" off any popular bands instead of being happy for their success. Again, I wobble on this subject, as there are some bands that achieve a certain level of media exposure and I think they are rather derivative of earlier acts. I stress derivative; the band isn't musically talentless, but rather not creating their own sound.
So, while I enjoy Coldplay, and I do not hear any particular musical progression, I can appreciate Coldplay's capture of a certain sound and genre. While someone might feel Coldplay is the worst band ever, and someone might attack a man while singing a "Yellow" karaoke (yes, this happened), I can sit back and get chills from this popular band. I can then listen to, say, Massive Attack and hear a pioneering spirit. 1991 was the beginning of this "trip-hop" sound that I wouldn't embrace until 1996! I was too busy being a snob.

All this rambling, spell-checked B.S. is to say that what I "DJ" is what I like, without too much negative attention from the various media sources. Someone once scratched off the word "alternative" on a sticker that was on the window of my truck. Times have changed..."alternative" doesn't offend so much, but it holds my interest.

Joe Pernice is the singer and songwriter for The Pernice Brothers. Their most recent album is called Yours, Mine and Ours. He has published a book of poetry. This is his first work of fiction.

33 1/3 is a new series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the last 40 years. Focusing on one album rather than an artist's entire output, the books dispense with the standard biographical background that fans know already, and cut to the heart of the music on each album. Read the rest of this Publisher's Summary here. (audible.com)

I got the audible download for free, so use your Internet skills and see if it turns up for free on Audible.
You can download one of my favorite Pernice Brothers songs (Somerville) from their website here.

I love the Juliana Hatfield album: How To Walk Away

I am on vacation, but it's a staycation. With the wedding and then Thanksgiving, I figured I'd just take the in-between days off. I just listened all the way through the new Juliana Hatfield CD "How To Walk Away" (released August, 2008.)
This album is so perfect that it prompted an immediate, somewhat bungled, blog post! The lyrics are honest and appeal to where I am at the moment. Maybe, the lyrics to track 5, "Just Lust" are too honest. That song is almost mean, but honesty can be cruel. "Remember November" should be experienced in November. "My Baby" is worded so carefully...
Just listen to this CD and perhaps it will speak to you, the single, the abandoned, the realists out there. I like the inclusion of Juliana's brother on piano. That lends credibility to Juliana's lyrics and the bravery of exposing her heart to her family. She's from New England, like me and my family, so she's a kindred spirit!

Here's some info I found on the release:
How To Walk Away, on Ye Olde Records, finds Hatfield singing in
top form. “Finally,” she says, “I feel like my voice has grown into
itself and I’m not struggling so much against its little-girl-ness.”
The album features guest appearances by two other distinctive
vocalists: Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler on “This Lonely Love”
and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws on “Such A Beautiful Girl.” Other featured
guest musicians were Fountains Of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter (some
lead guitar); Jeff Hill, of Rufus Wainwright’s band, on bass; and Ethan
Eubanks of the Grey Race on drums. Tracy Bonham guested on violin, and
Jason Hatfield, Juliana’s brother, played piano on two songs, which he
co-wrote (“Remember November” and “Such A Beautiful Girl”).
How To Walk Away was recorded at Stratosphere Sound, the NYC studio
co-owned by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne), James Iha (formerly
of Smashing Pumpkins), and Andy Chase (of revered alt-rock/pop band Ivy),
who produced the album. How To Walk Away is evocative, layered, and
unhurried yet Chase has managed to retain Hatfield’s essential rawness
of spirit, smoothing out some rough edges but not all. Witness, for
example, the loose, danceable “Now I’m Gone,” sung (and played) by
Hatfield in one inspired improvisational take. And while she has
frequently drawn from personal experience in the past, these songs
are some of her most candid ever.

By-the-numbers: The Postmarks

In 2008, the Postmarks released a new mp3 track every month, each song being a cover version of a tune featuring a number in the title that corresponded to the number of the month (similar to The Cure or even Biker Boy)....

Now to sit back to take in the effort as a whole... more to come. Beautiful music on Andy Chase's (of Ivy) label Unfiltered.

Many of the artists have been played on Like Sugar / DJ Talbot Original Mixes: LA Riots, Digitalism, Boys Noize, Crookers, Justice, Underworld....

Be sure to check out my mate, DJ Edgartronic and his visibly live-on-the-internet show every Friday if you dig this sort of dance music. It's a gig called Analogic Nights and he's the best my city has to offer.

Ingore my politics. Here's some news we can all enjoy!

After the success of the Seabound US tour this past March (I saw the LA show with Iris!), the band announces its return together with De/Vision. This tour will see the band visit cities that were not possible to reach last time, such as Toronto, Phoenix, and Florida. Seabound announce this double headlining tour with De/Vision. The first tour dates are available now on both bands' websites at www.seabound.de and www.devision-music.de . Interested promoters should contact management@seabound.de .

New band on Labrador Records! free mp3

Photobucket

Labrador proudly present Sweden's newest band – Pallers. “Humdrum" was produced in Spain with a view over the Mediterranean. During one week of constant sunshine they created the darkest and finest electronic music we’ve heard in a long time. This is dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed.

Free MP3 download here >> http://www.labrador.se/mp3/Pallers-humdrum.mp3

"Our heads are flooded after decades of intense listening, and when we create we pour it all out. One leg is always standing in the green grass of pop while the other leg is out on its own, wandering between places such as dancefloors, sandy beaches, cold concrete and a weightless existence in a bed or a hammock." PALLERS

"Humdrum" will be released on 12" vinyl on December 3 backed by a remix by Ultracity, a Pallers Delight Version and the future blazer-favourite "Slow down quickly.

Track list:
A1. Humdrum
A2. Humdrum (Pallers Delight Version)

B1. Slow Down Quickly
B2. Humdrum (Ultracity Epic Remix)

The Killers on Saturday Night Live

I thought they were quite good ( a great music season so far with Lil Wayne and even Duffy. King of Leon make me yawn). A small hiccup when the singer switched mics and the mic wasn't on. I think the music was too polished, but this was a t.v. performance. They played the great new single Human (for the record, I sang along and thought it was "dancer" too):

"Human" is a song by Las Vegas-based alternative rock band The Killers, and was released as the first single from the band's third studio album Day & Age. It began receiving airplay on September 22, with a digital release on September 30.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine's Smoking Section, Brandon Flowers described "Human" as "like Johnny Cash meets the Pet Shop Boys" and confessed to not putting it on Sawdust as "it was too good". There have been several mis-conceptions regarding the use and pronunciation of the word "denser" used in the line "Are we human or are we denser?" with many forum users and critics questioning Brandon Flowers' use of the word "dancer".

The Legends "Seconds Away" - free mp3

The Legends "Seconds Away" from Labrador:

"After two years of absence The Legends return with the noisiest pop single to ever come out of Sweden.
”Seconds away” balances perfectly between the unbearable and pure loveliness.

”I need noise now, so this new single sounds like someone drilling a whole in your head. In a pleasant way that is. It’s called "Seconds away" and is about the wonders of tryptizol. The B-side, "Over and over" is actually one of those sad love songs I had promised myself never to write again. But it was out of my hands; life forced me to write it. Sorry about that... Pallers has done a truly wonderful remix of it. It might actually beat the original, which is both a very good thing and slightly depressing at the same time.” Johan [aka The Legends].

"Seconds away" is released on November 5."

New synthpop for my ears - Christopher Anton

I received a nice surprise in Ye Olde Maile Boxe today. Thanks Postman Bob!
I am listening to said surprise as I drog. It's a fine Compact Disc from artist Christopher Anton (his myspace here). The CD is titled Your Perfect Tragedy and it's on Mirror Piece Records.
I'm only at track 5, and it's been a pleasant listen so far. The unavoidable comparisons to Depeche Mode are nagging me. As an act that spans decades now, Depeche Mode has several sounds and this CD does the same. I especially enjoyed what sounds like live drums on some tracks. A nice change from so much of the synth scene of today. There's a fair bit of guitar here too. Anton avoids the dreaded 129 beats per minute that has taken over the dancefloor. A nice change to haz some mid-tempo electronic pop!

Dirty On Purpose

Dirty On Purpose start a tour today, eh, and they'll be 2000-3000 miles from me, but that's ok. This is a great bill, as you get two top notch acts in one show. Could I be less of a wordsmith? Apologies...sunburned and my face is throbbing like a thing that throbs...*Kif sigh*

Tour Dates w/ The Wedding Present
September 29 @ Turf Club (St.
Paul, Minnesota)
September 30 @ High Noon Saloon (Madison, Wisconsin)

More New-Wave meets Punk coming your way!

Mikey!

Please add Mummy Guns to your friends list if you are on the myspaces! This is family and I gotta support my own blood! Listeners to Like Sugar know that I throw in one or two punk tracks from 1976-1982 on every show. We can thank my baby brother Mikey (pictured) for the recommendations and taste in the tough genre that is "punk rock".
Previous incarnations include: Midnight Murder and Retreat To The Wall.

Good Vibes to Give Away

I have uploaded a new mini-mix on my MySpace profile: it's like a skirt...long enough to cover the subject and short enough to keep your interest! It's what you'll hear on my Like Sugar Popcasts: Killing Joke, Division Kent, Loveninjas, Fischerspooner, The Smiths, Trembling Blue Stars, Apoptygma Berserk, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Eclectic to say the least.

Download said mini-mix here: http://www.zshare.net/audio/18155331413f77bc/ Sorry for the g-strings and junk.

Something won't let me
Go to the place
Where the Darklands are
And I awake from dreams
To a scary world of screams

Sunday Driver: What's on my iPod

Discovered a cute blog today: Hey Hey Honeypop!

The best part is that there are podcasts to go with! Here's a link to #6: Dance Around The Livingroom.
The playlist is full of new stuff (for me, and I love it!):

The Blue Minkies - Boyfriend in a box
Sportique - If you ever change your mind
The Andersen Tapes - Cross Country
How Many Beans Make Five - I could well believe that
Professor Pez - Papillon (Escape from Ulfsnes island)
Go Sailor - Windy
The Budgies - I love you (so what should I do?)
Verdurin - Mademoiselle de Ponsac
Dolly Mixture - He's so frisky
The Gentle Smiles - Mando Diao
My Little Airport - My little banana
France Gall - Avant la bagarre

I should post on the indiepop mailing list, but I am too shy and I would hate to be flamed for the lack of indiepop content in my podcasts.
Anyway, this is definitely on my iPod this week! Great job Marianthi!

--------------
Ostrich - Sleepy Angels (track) - can't get enough of the synth.

Arthur and Martha - Ultra Alliance (track) - I posted this earlier, but it's a gem.

Elegant Machinery - Move (track) - happy to hear more from this staple of the 90's synth scene.

KieTheVez - Non-Binary (album) - I am still exploring this long-awaited CD, searching for that one track that makes the album.

Leila - Blood, Looms and Blooms (album) - this album could be compared to Portishead and will take some repeated listens (while in the right mood) to come to any sort of opinion.

Osborne - Osborne (album) - everyone else likes house, and I keep searching for an album I can "love"...the search continues...

Black Ghosts - The Black Ghosts (album) - ex Simian dudes here. This is actually better than anything they did before, but it's rather like they are on auto-pilot.

Neil Halstead was in town on Friday, but I skipped it. The party I was at was simply more interesting. I enjoy his music and I adore Slowdive and Mojave 3, and I have seen him live, so I stayed on at the party where I was the only person with English as my first language!

Arthur and Martha release a perfect song!

Photobucket
One my very dearest myspace finds has done it again...Arthur and Martha have posted a perfect track that keeps the Summer going (for us in the Northern Hemisphere!)! I loved this song the first play and it is just a joy to hear. Give "Ultra Alliance" by Arthur and Martha a listen here: http://www.myspace.com/arthurandmartha and tell 'em who sent you!

They are on Happy Robots Records to boot! How can any Like Sugar listener go wrong with a label with a name like Happy Robots?

NME writes:

Character: Doing the right thing when no one is looking

I try to avoid blabbering about my political views and religious concerns, but this is an exciting time in American politics and, as a Christian, I must not be afraid to share what I believe and the people I support. My own pastor announced the following, only moments ago:

"I have been asked to speak at the Republican National Convention on Monday evening. I view this as an honor and a rare opportunity to serve my country with the gift and message God has given me.

I have not been asked nor will I explicitly endorse anyone or anything outside of a godly character, though people may read into my attendance there. Had I been asked to speak at the Democratic National Convention, I would have accepted that invitation as well. Although these are political events, they are spiritual assignments to me.

My topic is, "Character: Doing the right thing when no one is looking." I would like to get your thoughts on the topic of my speech. Please take a few minutes and click on the link to answer a few questions. Click here >>

I would appreciate your prayers for wisdom and protection, and most importantly, 'A double dose of the Holy Ghost.'

Event: Republican National Convention
Date: Monday, September 1, 2008
Time: 5:26pm pacific / 7:26pm central
Station: Viewable on C-SPAN

Exclusive remix of Ladytron's "Ghosts"

....by New York alt-rap collective Blestenation available on RCRD LBL.

Photobucket

From Nettwerk:
Adding to their choice catalog of LADYTRON tunes, RCRD LBL (www.rcrdlbl.com) released an exclusive remix of the Liverpool quartet's single "Ghosts" from New York alt-rap collective BLESTENATION (MC's Werdplay and Various and Producer/DJ Fafu). Blestenation keep the original's organ hum, earthy bassline and chorus hook intact, adding some ghettotech percussion and verses from MCs Werdplay and Various over top... tasteful, but a completely different steez.

The track is available here only and is free!

Catch Ladytron on tour now in Australia or Europe (tour dates listed on their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/ladytron).

Cover Me On Friday: DJ Talbot

This week, I cover my own self by posting a mix I did in January 2007. This is a mix I created for the popular Faction 6 collection of podcasts created by DJ Narcolept.
My show was called "CTRL-ALT-F6". This is show 10 and was recorded in January 2007.
I think this was the happiest month of my life and the quality of the mix exemplifies this.
CTRL-ALT-F6 may see a return to Faction 6 soon, so I thought I'd post this mix as a sample of the music you can expect.
Mevio has it now, as does zshare. I will add it to iTunes and Odeo soon.

Popaganda 2008

If I was the festival-going type (and had a load of cash), I'd be off to Sweden for the music festival Popaganda. It's held at Eriksdalsbadet, 29-30th of August.
Popaganda will have 20 acts performing. So far the following acts are confirmed:

bob hund
Säkert!
Sebastien Tellier (FR)
Teddybears STHLM
Hercules and Love Affair (US)
The Hidden Cameras (CAN)
The Embassy
Bonde Do Role (BR)
Shout Out Louds
Familjen
Laakso
Florence Valentin
Kelley Polar (US)
Joel Alme
First Aid Kit
Marching Band
Palpitation

Friday:
Säkert!
Sebastién Tellier
Teddybears STHLM
Hercules and Love Affair
Shout Out Louds
The Embassy
Kelley Polar
Florence Valentin
First Aid Kit
Palpitation

Saturday:
bob hund
The Hidden Cameras
Bonde do Role
Familjen
Laakso
Joel Alme
Marching Band

Vapnet posted this (online translator was not helpful; I need to learn more Swedish!):
Vi kommer att spela på Popaganda. På lördagen den 30 augusti, halv tre på dan.

Vi ska även göra vår debut i Norge, på Phonofestivalen i Bergen, den 19 september.

Tänkte skriva "vi syns" men kom på att det är en rätt tom fras att använda inför en konsert. Vi i bandet kommer ju att synas tack vare scen och lampor och sånt, men något möte är det ju inte tal om egentligen. Kanske lika bra det, det vore så nervöst då.

The Cure - The Perfect Boy

Another 13th of the month and another Cure single is released. I've heard this one on some live recordings and videos, and I was looking forward to it. "The Perfect Boy" was going to compliment "The Perfect Girl", I hoped. The Perfect Girl is one of my Top 25 Cure Songs (could there be less?)! It's in no way a pop song the way A Perfect Girl is....bummer. A single? I dunno. The B-sides have been more exciting of late, but don't let that comment lead you to believe that I think Smith is anything less than the genius he is. The 90's were a low point for The Cure. They are back now and this is a pinnacle.

Swedesplease.net

Swedesplease was kind and posted a link to my blog! Thanks for the traffic! I have no advertising or Adsense on my page, this is just an outlet for me to meet nice girls from Sweden. j/k it's just music and music is my drug.

About Swedesplease, from Swedesplease:
Swedesplease was the first daily mp3 blog devoted to Swedish music. It's gone on to be recognized by Swedish Public Radio, Swedish press, The London Times, The Guardian, The Chicago Tribune and on and on. If Swedesplease has a slant or plays favorites it's a mostly due to an insatiable love of Swedish indie pop, electronica and twee. Most songs posted are free and legal courtesy of the artists and labels.

Be sure to check out Pelle Carlberg's new one, due out August 27. It's called The Lilac Time. Pelle is that unique voice you hear in Edson, as featured in my Faction 6 - CTRL-ALT-F6 mixes: the tracks were "I love you, you imbecile" and "The Caged Bird Sings" . On the new recording he plays most of the instruments himself and has four children!

Bodies Without Organs

Is there a synth band more fun than Bodies Without Organs?
BWO - Hooked On The Danger

electronordica.com has the best Bodies Without Organs (a.k.a. BWO) coverage. A good introduction to them is the April 2008 release of a singles collection called "Pandemonium".

Here's a silly older video if you've never heard these poppy electronic meatballs:

Sunday Driver: What's On my iPod

Sunday Driver: What's On my iPod - this is a combined post for Sunday, August 3 and today, Sunday, August 10.

Louis Eliot - I'm searching like mad for more from him. I treasure my Rialto cds and they never leave my DJ CD case. Monday Morning 5:19 is still a club hit and the acoustic version will break your non-cheating heart.

Thermostatic - Humanizer - After week of plays on the mp3 player, I am not bored. Good modern synthpop. Bonus points for female vocals.

The Little Ones - morning tide; just testing this one out.
According to the BBC, "Their sunshine-infused, optimism-fuelled material is made more poignant by this defiant refusal to be disheartened by a world so jaded.
Every cut apparently only made it to tape if it made the band want to dance." Read, more here.

Blank & Jones - The Logic Of Pleasure; the title annoys me. The logic of_________ (insert word that will make you think the whole album is a reflection of this word).
This one starts so well and sputters out. The first half is the album, the second is all filler. I love Stars and the mix of The Night Starts Here is very good. Bernard Sumner does vocals on track two and it's a treat. I need more trance in my life.

Close Lobsters - Headache Rhetoric; I am back in 1988 with this material and I think it stands up well. I could never get over the Smiths break-up!

M83 - Saturday = Youth; this ones taking some time, but it may be the best I have heard from these boys. I keep thinking I'm listening to the Radio Dept.

KLOQ - first listen today and I hear some Nitzer Ebb here! Excellent!

Ashbury Heights - the tracks Spiders will be on a popcast soon.

Neil Halstead - Oh Mighty Engine; twelve new songs from the voice of Slowdive and Mojave 3. Listening because I love his voice and lyrics. The music might not otherwise interest me, honestly. It's the application of his familiar voice to a genre I wouldn't otherwise give any listening time to...oh, and he was very friendly when he was here in San Diego. I am afraid to meet my heroes sometimes...when they are nice, I get more into their music. The cold, distant ones...get shelved often.

Midnight Resistance - I have one track off the Synthpop Club Anthems 5 cd. Todd, label-master over at A Different Drum, is really excited about the full album release,
so I am giving him a plug!

Scarlett Johansonn - I Don't Want To Grow Up - she's a doll and good actress, therefore, she can sing. Mmmmmm.

Cranes - The Forever album found its way onto the player. I guess it's cuz I made a vow before the authority of God, and my wife broke hers. I love her, and I will never lessen that love.

De/Vision - honestly, this German act never leaves my mp3 player. I live for synthpop and De/Vision never fails to fit any mood! "A Prayer" is this week's pick.

The Faint - Fasciinatiion - first listen today. So far so good. Found a remix too: http://www.thefaint.com/streaming/TheGeeks-DIOYY_Remix.mp3

Other musings from my life:

From the creator of Six Feet Under comes a new take on how the undead live. True Blood, Alan Ball's new original series for HBO, premiers September 7 at 9 PM.
Read Alan Ball's point of view. The Academy Award® winning writer and director speaks about fans of Six Feet Under, storytelling, the process of making True Blood, and avoiding the trappings of vampire clichés.

Black Kids, The Foxglove Hunt, Cut Copy - still on the mp3 player. No need to replace these excellent albums. Repeat:shuffle!

I have been playing American McGee's new game "Grimm" and, well, it's a bit of a disappointment! I LOVE the art, but the gameplay is stale.
But did I mention the art? I'll sit through the mindless gameplay for the art.

Here's a video for a song that keeps appearing in my private sets, house parties, etc. Timeless!

I Want To Be All Alone

This song is often in my head when the shit hits the fan. Family drama at the moment, as regular readers know. It's been bad enough that I deleted a post or two because the crap has been heavy. I hate my own father, but that is not compatible with my Christian faith. I forgive and he never changes.

Don't you hate it when....

Huh. I swear I included The Foxglove Hunt in one of my Like Sugar Popcasts, and yet my list of tracks doesn't have 'em on it. G0d, I love the simplicity of this video. Expect to hear the track on Popcast 14.

Also, I can have bad taste on occasion. I like cheesy stuff sometimes. So, be kind and rawk out with me to old fav:

And if you really want to know me, you'll watch this video and see the real me!

Tragedy for Greg Laurie

One my most beloved pastors, Greg Laurie, lost his son Christopher last week in a car accident. I came across an L.A. Times story about the local impact here.
I hope this attracts more people to the Harvest Crusade.

The Proof

Photobucket

See, I went out. I am an awful photographer, sometimes. Here are my friends, all comfy in the V.I.P. room! Thank-you, May for the invite!

OMG I am going out!

Yes. I have found the sand to do it! I will find my the A.C. Lounge tonight to meet with a promoter about a new DJ gig. I will also be there to support DJ Edgartronic and May of MayStar. I will have pics taken to prove it happened. My outfit is awful. If I had flip-flops on, I'd be soooo Jack Jackson....I have a horrible tan, over-grown hair and a shirt with swirlies and birds. The nose ring, fruity rocker white belt and Doc's should make up for the non-night-club lack of style. Also, I have pepper spray and fast feet. This non dive bar among dive bars / clubs has been targeted of late....and to think I DJ'd across the street at Kadan a couple years ago! It was never this dangerous. I certainly walked alone after 2 am with my records and CDs. I guess I was lucky.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Yeah, I'm so there....maybe

Yeah, I know I promise and talk a lot, but never show up. At any rate, I will still promote my friends' efforts to bring music to San Diego's otherwise stale scene.

Apoptygma Berserk announce new album

Did I already post this? Sorry for repeating.
Then again, some things are worth saying twice!

Apop is one of the acts I will always follow, no matter how the sound changes, no matter how popular. God knows, I spent a small fortune in the 1990's on their imports. I actually met someone while discussing Apop...and it was a nice, albeit short relationship. Now that I think about relationships, I met someone over a Ministry discussion (I was an ass and asked "Do you listen to Ministry or are you just wearing the shirt?") That relationship was not so good. She moved in with me in 3 weeks and well, I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

As some of you have already heard, there will be a new album and it has a name already now, the new album will be called ROCKET SCIENCE!

You can see ROCKET SCIENCE LIVE with a great new show, some hidden treasures and instant classics here:
