Back to Work

Well, it's been my first day back at work. I made a pile of money, and that will help pay off the debt I incurred in the two months I had off. Doctor gave me all this time off, but, since I am self employed there was no money in the government coffers to pay myself with. A wash.

I hope my podcasts are making someone's day better. I am in touch with many acts and they are happy to allow me to use their mp3 tracks.

Please, if you have any sort of comment, please leave one. I see a lot of downloads and listens, but I have no feedback.

Warmly,

DJ Talbot (Eric)

Most boring Christmas ever: 2007.
Takes the number one spot when my psycho girlfriend's sister told to me shut the f*ck" up" on Christmas Eve. I wasn't even talking to her, but she decided to pipe in because she didn't like me being a male. I can protect my wife without controlling her.

Sambassadeur "Final say" - free MP3 single

Sambassadeur "Final say" - free MP3 single

Second single from Sambassadeur's masterpiece "Migration" is their most luxurious track to date. With Miami Vice-percussion, a choir that seems to be singing underground and galloping guitars "Final say" is bound to dominate any tasteful dance floors in the year 2008. Truly wonderful!

"Anna Persson's whispery vocals are still a big part of the group's charm, but her words get outshone here by the jet-set production: massive 1980s synth-pop snares, skittering hi-hats, and touches of tropical percussion underlie a deft, trebly guitar riff and reverb-dripping synths" PITCHFORK

"Final say" is released on CD single on January 30. Until then, please enjoy this free MP3 download.

An explanation of "C-86" and or the "C-86 sound"

Could someone please offer me ?
"C-86" was the name of an influential cassette and album put out by the Brit music mag NME in 1986. It was modeled on their earlier cassette from 1981 called "C-81" which had introduced a number of young new bands like Orange Juice and Aztec Camera. C-86 had tracks by the Wedding Present, Soup Dragons, Mighty Lemon Drops, Pastels, Bodines, Primal Scream, Close Lobsters, other bands of a type called at the time "shambling" or "anorak" pop for their jangly-strummy guitars, hyper-melodic songs, and slightly-out-tune vocals, emphasizing all the classic points of the now-familiar indiepop style. There were also a number of songs in a rather different vein from other, crustier, Brit indie styles, like Stump and Half Man Half Biscuit and all that Ron Johnson stuff. But it was the indiepop songs like "This Boy Can Wait", "Therese", "Velocity Girl" and so on that struck deeply in the hearts of pathetic little unpopular wankers like us, and started something of a revolution that eventually turned into "twee" and Sarah and all the rest. When you see "C-86" as a reference point around here, that's what they're referring to - a particular style of pre-Sarah British indiepop that encompasses lots of bands that weren't on C-86 as well, like Talulah Gosh and so on.

Eux Autres - Live Show in San Diego

Eux Autres

December, 14 2007 at Kensington Club
w/ Red Pony Clock, Fishboy
4079 Adams Ave, San Diego, California 92116

Eux Autres, a Portland-based duo, plays pop music. The band consists of brother and sister Heather and Nicholas Larimer. Heather plays drums, Nicholas plays guitar, and they both sing. Practices frequently devolve into shoving matches.

Eux Autres write compact songs with sparse instrumentation. Their music has been unfairly described as “fun.” But while the surface of the songs might seem nonchalant, the lyrics offer skewed observations and fierce barbs. Most of their songs are about a) military history b) being "done wrong" or c) sports. Sadly, Eux Autres are the only people who notice this.

New CD, Cold City, released December 4 on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records!

Whole-Album-Listening

There are so many better mp3 and music blogs out there...I just meet the quality that they exude. Basically, this page is best for the little player on the right, where my mixes are always posted.
Read the little blue box down a little further for links to the stories on the better blogs.

Listening to the new Lasse Lindh and it reminds me of last night's Whole-Album-Listening that I occasionally force myself to experience (last night being Stars' "In Our Bedroom After the War"). I will need to try that one again. Tad disappointed with it. Lasse Lindh is very mellow too, but it has something twinkling about it.
I do like the Dirty On Purpose EP "Like Bees". Inspiring shoe gaze! Voxtrot and The Macabees continue to grow on me.

Last week's "Thanksgiving" Mix is still up on zshare:

The Moz

It's been a lame night of repeated Morrissey listenings (were you and he lovers?). Where did I get started in this? I think it was a cover or somesuch. Maybe it was my recent visit to my childhood neighborhood. It has much improved, but who would believe that Morrissey had found his way to my ears in such a place? I thank God for this one good thing about living in such a backwards place. I escaped.

Shitdisco cancel American Tour : (

Per the band’s Myspace:

On Sunday afternoon, Joel became violently ill. An ambulance was called & he was kept in hospital overnight for tests, the doctors unsure of what was wrong. The next day he was discharged and went back to Newcastle to recuperate, but on Tuesday it started again and he was taken back to hospital.

From mysapce:
This has happened before and everytime the doctors have been unable to pin down the cause. In the past it has been written off as nervous exhaustion, but this time the doctors think there might be something else and they’re trying to figure it out. He has been moved to another hospital and today underwent exploratory surgery.

Unfortunately all this means we are left with no option but to cancel our North American tour. We are deeply sorry to anyone who was planning to come and see us, we’d been looking forward to this one for awhile and its a damn shame this had to happen when it did. Hopefully the doctors can figure out what is going wrong this time so Joel can make a full recovery.
Our thoughts are with his family.

I don't drink coffee. Never had one cup.
This coffee place is changing their name.
I would have died at 12 if I knew there was a place called "Beaner's".

I missed this news:
THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

I guess it's 'cuz I hate team sports and I never read the Sports section. Poor McRae family. God Bless...

How Do I Do It?

I am often not asked what gear I use to produce my stunningly brilliant mixes. So, once and for all, here is the answer.

It's Friday

Get Songbird

The title was a place holder, but I failed to post anything.
So, it's Saturday now. I should be in Golden Hills for SessionsFest....

I ended up at the Triple Crown Pub last night. Starcrossed played their first show with what was supposed to be a new line-up. Their guitarist died last week, so the only new member was Shadow, the drum-machine. I thought they played rather well, considering the emotions that could have brought it all crashing down.

The show reminded me why I can't stand going out anymore. College aged knuckle-heads with pitchers of beer screaming at sports events on t.v. You can't mix the arty music crowd with the meat-headed sports crowd. I like to DJ at bars, but I don't like to see bands at bars. Is it that hard to dim the frigging lights? It's a show for entertainment. Give the band a chance to do what they do without cutting the mystery factor to zero.

Also, I looked around, being single and just plain curious. Not one decent looking girl. I even dropped my standards and looked among the smoker-chicks. Not one, and this is San Diego! Triple Crown= bar flies. Thank goodness for the internet ; )

Oh, wait, the *itch you emailed me and instructed me to "go *uck yourself". She was there. So, as we can see, she is not only classless and rude, but she hangs out at trashy bars.Get Songbird

The Go Team! - Proof of Youth out 9/11

The Go Team! - Proof of Youth (2007)

Is it possible to sound like you're having more fun than The Go! Team? Probably not, going on Proof of Youth, the second album from Brighton's brightest pop experimentalists. As on its predecessor, 2004's Thunder, Lightning, Strike, the eleven songs of Proof of Youth burst out your speakers like tangy pop bubblegum, but on closer inspection, suggest a broader, braver web of influences; many bands can remind you of the chirpy soul singalongs of The Jackson 5, the metallic guitar clang of Sonic Youth, or the cut-and-paste sonic collages of Public Enemy's The Bomb Squad, but only one can do it in a single song. "Grip Like a Vice" and "Titanic Vandalism" prove The Go! Team template is present and correct, joyful melanges of car-chase horns, double dutch vocals, melodic guitar, and crowd-hyping rapping from MC/cheerleader Ninja. But there's more here than formula. "My World" is a simple, pretty interlude of acoustic guitar, shaker, and synthesiser straight from some Look Around You-style 1980s science show, "I Never Needed It Now So Much" is a naïve pop song featuring vocals from Solex, and the glorious "Flashlight Fight" is a Public Enemy pastiche that actually features Chuck D. Skill. --Louis Pattison

Tracklist:
1. Grip Like a Vice
2. Doing It Right
3. My World
4. Titanic Vandalism
5. Fake ID
6. Universal Speech
7. Keys to the City
8. The Wrath of Marcie
9. I Never Needed It Now So Much
10. Flashlight Fight
11. Patricia's Moving Picture
