OMG I am going out!

Yes. I have found the sand to do it! I will find my the A.C. Lounge tonight to meet with a promoter about a new DJ gig. I will also be there to support DJ Edgartronic and May of MayStar. I will have pics taken to prove it happened. My outfit is awful. If I had flip-flops on, I'd be soooo Jack Jackson....I have a horrible tan, over-grown hair and a shirt with swirlies and birds. The nose ring, fruity rocker white belt and Doc's should make up for the non-night-club lack of style. Also, I have pepper spray and fast feet. This non dive bar among dive bars / clubs has been targeted of late....and to think I DJ'd across the street at Kadan a couple years ago! It was never this dangerous. I certainly walked alone after 2 am with my records and CDs. I guess I was lucky.

Yeah, I'm so there....maybe

Yeah, I know I promise and talk a lot, but never show up. At any rate, I will still promote my friends' efforts to bring music to San Diego's otherwise stale scene.

Apoptygma Berserk announce new album

Did I already post this? Sorry for repeating.
Then again, some things are worth saying twice!

Apop is one of the acts I will always follow, no matter how the sound changes, no matter how popular. God knows, I spent a small fortune in the 1990's on their imports. I actually met someone while discussing Apop...and it was a nice, albeit short relationship. Now that I think about relationships, I met someone over a Ministry discussion (I was an ass and asked "Do you listen to Ministry or are you just wearing the shirt?") That relationship was not so good. She moved in with me in 3 weeks and well, I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

As some of you have already heard, there will be a new album and it has a name already now, the new album will be called ROCKET SCIENCE!

You can see ROCKET SCIENCE LIVE with a great new show, some hidden treasures and instant classics here:

Fourth album by Ganymede due August 5

More good news found in my InBox; I still remember their great live show on January 16, 2003 in San Diego, CA at club Electroluxe (at Rich's 1051 University Avenue! Hard to believe it's been 8 years since Ganymede's debut CD "After The Fall."

"At long last, the epic fourth album by Ganymede is now available for pre-order, and will be released on August 5! Check out a special video preview of the new album here. Sample tracks from the new album are now on MySpace.

A few words about the album:

Building on the Ganymede legacy, "Operation Ganymede" is a retro-electro voyage into deep space and back. The beats are solid, the basslines are subatomic, and the synth leads are sumptuous as the boys tell the story of a doomed U.S.-Soviet joint mission to Jupiter.
Coming along for the ride is Bay Area disco legend Paul Parker, whose #1 Billboard dance smashes "Right on Target" and "One Look Was Enough" are as fresh today as ever. Paul contributes lead vocals to an instant Ganymede classic, the Italo disco-flavored "Perfect Target." Other standout tracks on the album include the pulse-pounding "Deeds Not Words," the epic closing track "The Final Mission" and the ballad "Love Is Not the End."

Don’t miss the fantastic journey, and be sure to pick up your copy today. The first edition of "Operation Ganymede" comes in a metallic-printed Digipak designed by noted L.A. artist Jesse Vital.

As always, thanks for your continued support. Note that the new Ganymede website will go live around the time the album is officially released.

Best,
Patrick Runkle and David Friede

Missing Bishop Pass hiker found...dead

A man's body found in a remote section of the eastern Sierra Nevada Wednesday has been positively identified as missing hiker Ric DeVan, his father said Thursday.

A memorial fund has been set up for DeVan's family. Contributions may be made to the Ric DeVan Memorial Fund at North Island Credit Union, P.O. Box 85833, San Diego, CA 92186. The account number is 116774574.
DeVan, 44, was found about one mile east of his last known location, where he signed a register at the 13,085-foot summit of Mount Goode and noted that he planned to hike to Mount Johnson, said DeVan's father, who is also named Ric DeVan and lives in Santee.

The mountain is located in the Bishop Pass/Treasure Lakes area of Inyo County west of Bishop and encompasses the Inyo National Forest and Kings Canyon National Park. - San Diego Union Tribune

I have hiked all over this area. It's really not remote, and rather busy this time of year. You really can't camp without someone tramping through your site at some point. Still, my heart goes out to the family. The press just makes this sound like some crazy adventure area that it's not. You can't get lost here, but, as anywhere, you can fall.

This is from SummitPost.org from bdidder, the man who found Ric’s pack:

I found Ric’s packback around 4:40 pm Tues afternoon below a summit SouthEast of Mt. Goode that many call Mt. No Goode. The pack was at the base of a steep and very loose gully that dropped directly from the summit blocks to the talus field below. Initially I tried to climb up the gully to see if I could locate him but poor weather and loose and falling rocks prevented me from going further up into the gully. His body was located and recovered yesterday several hundred feet above where his backpack was found. It appears he fell from close to the summit or perhaps had tried to descend the gully and fell. Regardless it is a terrible loss and my heart and prayers go out to Ric’s family and friends.

Pelle Carlberg "1983 (Pelle & Sebastian)" - Free MP3 single

Found this Labrador Records newsletter in my inbox this a.m.:

"1983 (Pelle & Sebastian)" is a seductive breeze of a melancholic Swedish summer, borrowed percussion from Rio de Janerio and late nights with Love's "Forever changes" in the headphones. And not only that, it's also the first single from Pelle Carlberg's upcoming album "The Lilac Time".

Free MP3 download here >>

In Jaunary 2008 Pelle Carlberg plays his last gig of the ”In a nutshell”-tour in Kuala Lumpur and returns to Sweden to write songs for his third solo album. He buys an abandoned church in a desolated area of the island of Gotland and spends six weeks there. "– I had to leave Stockholm to make this album. In the middle of nowhere it’s easy to write in soulful and relaxed".

’The difficult third album’ has rarely seemed more natural and free from pressure. Pelle has managed to write his finest melodies to this date and his lyrics are so full of exact everyday observations and wry humor it’s close to deadpan.

PMS

Potty Mouth Sissys have a new fun track up... "I Want To Be An Alcoholic." Listen and laugh, it's the only way I can deal with it all!

Best known for their outrageous lyrics and their variety of music styles, the POTTY MOUTH SISSYS (PMS) have been splitting sides and widening eyes for 15+ years now. This adult-comedy-rap group began in 1992 created by "Ryan B." when he was just 17-years-old.

The Mixes Keep On Coming! Popcast 12 is here!

Thank goodness for Zshare! I tried to upload to Odeo about 10 times and the transfer just times out. Odeo is my iTunes connection, so I need it to share my mixes with the most users! For now, the die-hard can brave the crass adverts on zshare.

Trip-Hop or Chill Mix by DJ Talbot circa 2002

Click here to download: DJ Talbot - Original Mixes - Trip-hop Vol. 1 download free via zShare

Update 09-08-08: I uploaded the file again to Zshare:

DJ Talbot - Original Mixes - Trip-hop Vol. 1

http://www.zshare.net/audio/18423478bceeb34a/

and I will post the link as soon as the upload is complete.
I will also post the mix in a more permanent place (Odeo) and make it available via iTunes.

I use Odeo to host my mixes (60!) and pass them on to iTunes. Odeo recently changed the interface and it's really generic. My files, with art and play-lists, can still be accessed at a legacy address. I can't get my mix uploaded today, as Odeo always times out, so I will post it on zShare for now. I have a new Like Sugar nearly ready, but I am not happy with the voice-over. The mix of music is great.

I am going to upload as many older mixes as possible. I did a series of trip-hop mixes from 2000 - 2004. Some tracks beat-mix and some just fade into each other. The series was very popular among my friends, and I went through stacks of CD-Rs and two burners. I DJ'd at clubs and bars and house parties as a strictly trip-hop DJ. At the time, I guess there weren't a lot of people playing this stuff live.

Below is the play-list for the first trip-hop / chill-out / after-hours / down-tempo CD I created. I hope you enjoy it. I had a great time re-visiting these tracks. They stand up quite well and sound as modern and relevant today as they did some years back.

01 - Emiliana Torrini - Unemployed In Summertime
02 - Lux - 100 Billion Stars
03 - Everything But The Girl - The Heart Remains A Child
04 - Esthero - That Girl
05 - Hooverphonic - Eden
06 - Lamb - Gabriel
07 - Mandalay - Beautiful
08 - Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde
09 - Lightning Seeds - You Showed Me (cover)
10 - Morcheeba - The Sea
11 - Neverwood - Sky
12 - Puracane - Summertime Rolls (Jane's Addiction cover)
13 - Lovage - Book of the Month
14 - Dido - Worthless
15 - Massive Attack - Safe From Harm (Perfecto Mix)

LYRICS: The Heart Remains A Child

I dreamed about you again last night
You never have the same face twice
but I always know its you and
and you're always looking better than you really do
and you really do.

I walk around the whole next day
feeling like a still have something to say
but I don't know what it is
and I don't know how to reach you even if I did, even if I did.

Do I wanna hear that you forgive me?
Do I wanna hear you're no good without me?
and am I big enough to hear that you never even think about me.
why should you ever think about me?

And I thought that I'd outgrow this kind of thing.
Tell me, aren't we supposed to mature or something.
But I haven't found that yet.
Is this as grown up as we'll ever get?
Maybe this is as good as it gets.

And years may go by.
But I think the heart remains a child.
The mind may grow wise, but the heart just sulks, and it whines,
and remains a child, I think the heart remains a child.
Why don't you love me? Why don't you love me? Why don't you love me?

Cover Me On Friday - What? What?

Cougar and Snail rockin' my house tonight!

I came across a couple new covers over the past 2 weeks, but they were sub-par. Bad, as in not good. Cringe-worthy. Since I dislike bashing bands, I won't mention the losers. Maybe Scarlett Johansson just turned me off to covers for the time being. So, in acknowledgment of the fact that many covers are horrible, let's just skip it this week, shall we?

Have some fun with Potty Mouth Sissys until I post something more arty-farty. As a big-ass fan since the Mental Disorder track was released on 21st Circuitry's Cold-wave Break, I can say these guys are the next big thing from the Detroit. D' Moon and Ryan B are number one, so you betta run!

Pains of Being Pure at Heart mp3

A band featured on Like Sugar, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, have new demo out. Find it here. It's called Gothenberg Handshake.
After spending the last hour listening to hard dance-floor only music, I was running out of steam. This little number (one minute, thirty-three seconds) has me thinking I need to lay off the dance and get back to what I love.

Missing: Ian Curtis memorial stone!

The BBC reports that some asshat has taken Ian's stone from a cemetery in Cheshire. Read about it and become agog.

While I posting about Joy Division, why not read this interview with Peter Hook? Seems his new act, Freebass is coming along and will feature some serious heroes of mine!

New Bloc Party video: Mercury

Bloc Party's next single "Mercury" has a video, now available on their official website. It's rather creepy, especially if images of Baphomet or human-like apes every bothered you in your nightmares. I think the track is a bit repetitive, in the lyric department. I could never complain about repetitiveness in the music dept.

"American" Apparel

I continue my rant: American Apparel Will Make You Look Like A Fat Hooker
Awful store, hideously overpriced, and crap ads with ugly "models" that are way under 18.

Why then has Sebastien Tellier gotten involved with this crap? Read about it over at Discobelle.net

Feeling Lively

Has anyone else tried Google's Lively?

LA Times says: "As if Google didn't have a strong enough hold on the planet already, today it's launching its own world -- a virtual world, to be exact. Lively, which Google likes to call a "virtual experience," allows you to create an avatar, decorate your own virtual room, invite friends to your room and do things you've always dreamed of, like blow up oil barrels on a deserted island.
Here's the rest of the an LA Times article on the announcement of this free product.

It's still in beta, and I hope to see more art added. I uploaded my own music to my room, and I am waiting to see if it plays.

Happy Elves!

Photobucket

I was bummed (over something I forgot about already) and my bro made me this great photoshop pic. I actually remember this day with perfect clarity. I think I'm traumatized because I was humiliated by being forced to wear red tights. A portrait of dysthymia. Where was my Dad in all this? LOL

This is not their strongest song, but hey, there's a video! Now we can see what Nephu Huzzband looks like.
I played 'em on Like Sugar some months back and it's nice to see these kids getting more popular.

Trying to be a blog

Some music I am looking into:

Joy Revision - The live tribute to Joy Division
http://www.myspace.com/joyrevision
Did ya know, the actors in the film "Control" actually played the music in the movie? They sounded dead-on, no pun intended.

Starcrossed - New Album!
http://www.myspace.com/starcrossedrock
I heard from front-man Mark that they are finishing recording a new album. I will try to wrest some details from him. This is one act that has mastered several genres of rock and I cannot believe they haven't been picked-up by the Big Labels yet.

DJ Talbot - Like Sugar Popcast 12 -
Yep, that's me. I should be finishing it right now, but why listen to old music when I can hear so much new stuff? Besides, I have to script it more. I plan to give the show more dimension by describing the Like Sugar Control Room (aka studio.) I want listeners to tune in and have a story of sorts to follow.
See the new mevio Like Sugar location.

Levy - Glorious
http://www.myspace.com/levy
As I cannot stop listening to "Rotten Love", I figured Levy's newest single might capture my heart.

Biker Boy
Biker Boy - a new track is available for download. "Chanson de juillet" comes in two versions, a master and a Mr. Pedro Remix. I love French vocals, so I am inclined to like this song! Is that a sax in the mix? Oh-so-early 80's! Boy-girl vocal always attract me as well. Now, all I need to hear is chimes and bells and I'd be in Heaven.

Santogold - Hmmm... style is all over the place. Track 4 is MIA and Track 5 is a good Siouxsie Sioux....earlier tracks had the aroma of ska. Hated the cover of the CD, as many reviewers have also noted. I'm A Lady (feat. Trouble Andrew) is my favorite track, followed by "Anne" which has an almost Cure-like dark music background with more Siouxsie-esque vocals. The remix at the end is a remix of the worst song on the album ("You'll Find A Way"). As I type this, I have to stop and hit stop on my WinAmp player. Awful remix!

And, now, here's Morrissey walking a dog; I have yet to see Moz look bad in a photo.
