Elegant Machinery

Next to Anything Box, De/Vision, Kie The Vez and Mesh....Elegant Machinery are my fav modern synthpop band from the '90's. New single on YouTube:

Synthpop: Dark Distant Spaces release new CD

After a few listens, I can say that I am quite happy to promote "Dark Distant Spaces" and the new album "Dark Like My Soul". Here's a blurb from Side-line Magazine:

The !ntelligent Communications signed act Dark Distant Spaces has finished the work on their newest release "Dark like my soul". The release will be out on February 1st 2008. You can check out 7 preview tracks for the 13-track album at the !ntelligent Communications website. The album will be the first since 2001's "Then-Now-Forever". Dark Distant Spaces was founded in Augsburg in Autumn 1984 by Ronald Noel, Veit Wiehler and Harald Schoger. The band's very first official CD release was 1993's "The Phone Call" maxi cd after having release 5 demo tapes.

Happy Easter

I finally joined twitter. My user name is djtalbot. I really don't like everyone to know what I am doing every minute and that's why I don't like facebook. At least I have total control on what gets posted on twitter. I am following Leo LaPorte and Scoble. Steven Bourelle (owner of sierravisions.com) Veronica Belmont, twit and dl.tv are the only other people I have found so far. I'd like to meet more people, especially from Sweden.

I just to get this link a lil exposure.
I a re-listening to a few of my popcasts and I think the tracks I picked have held up quite well over the last 9 months or so.
What do you think?

Cover Me on Friday: The Lightning Seeds

Another cover, this one from 1997. Ian Broudie / The Lightning Seeds take on The Turtles' 1968 hit "You Showed Me"
(This song was written in 1964 by Harold Eugene Clark and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds).

Sing along!
(Jim McGuinn - Gene Clark)

You showed me how to do
Exactly what you do
How I fell in love with you
Oh, oh, oh, it's true
Oh, oh, I love you

You showed me how to say
Exactly what you say
In that very special way
Oh, oh, oh, it's true
You fell for me too

And when I tried it
I could see you fall
And I decided
It's not a trip at all

You taught it to me too
Exactly what you do
And now you love me too
Oh, oh, oh, it's true
We're in love we too

Na na na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
Oh oh oh oh oh
We're in love we two
We two

You showed me how to do
Exactly what you do
How I fell in love with you
(You...)

Showed me how to say
Exactly what you say
In that very special way
(You...)

Taught it to me too
Exactly what you do
And now you love me too
Now you love me too

Labrador signs The Sound of Arrows (free MP3)

Labrador is proud to present The Sound of Arrows - the band that will lead Swedish pop into the next decade. With the deepest love possible they gather sounds and samples from all over and turn them into lush pop songs with exquisitely beautiful melodies.

Download MP3 here >>http://www.labrador.se/mp3/thesoundofarrows-danger.mp3

The Sound of Arrows treat their own songs like remixes and will present their releases almost like mixtapes. Their approach to music bare some similarity to Saint Etienne around “Foxbase Alpha” or The Avalanches, but they never end up sounding like either. The future of music can not be compared to anything - this is The Sound of Arrows!

"Danger!" is taken from the upcoming 9-track (!) EP due to be released on May 7.

Gary Gygax runs out of Hit Points

As a DM, I am saddened by this AP report:

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

Killing Joke to re-form!

(from Drowned In Sound)
The original members of Killing Joke will reform for the first time since 1987 for a new studio album and world tour.

Paul Ferguson has been absent the longest, leaving the band in 1987, while bassist and now producer, sometime member with The Orb, DJ and “druid” (this, part two) Martin ‘Youth’ Glover returns after almost 15 years to complete the original rhythm section, reports Blabbermouth.

With vocalist/keyboardist Jaz Coleman and guitarist Geordie Walker also in tow, the band will play a couple of nights in most cities they call in at; the first seeing a run through of the two earliest records - Killing Joke and What’s This For? - before Pandemonium and the singles released in 1979 and 1980 on Island comprise the set for the second night.

"At last a ray of sunlight to illuminate these dark days,” proclaims Coleman. “It is indeed my deepest pleasure to announce the dates of the 29th anniversary of the gathering.”

(Venue details courtesy of Pitchfork):

September
13 Tokyo Club Quattro
14 Tokyo Club Quattro

October

More: “As usual, we are never content sitting on the laurels of past glories. A new KILLING JOKE recording is scheduled this summer!”

There are no details on that just yet, though Coleman seems to have more than enough enthusiasm for us to trust in his words.

“We always knew this day would come after all it was inevitable. We hope all gatherers will join us in warmly welcoming back to active service our brothers Big Paul and Youth. The mysterious chemistry of the original line up is back, let there be gladness in your hearts."

Cover Me On Friday: Dirty On Purpose

I played this song on my December 2007 Shoegaze Podcast, and it met well with the audience. This is bona-fide Classic 80's track.
